CHURCH RECORDING – ST JOHN THE BAPTIST

Under the umbrella of the National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Society (NADFAS), Church Recorders promote the preservation of our artistic heritage in places of worship by recording the contents of our churches.

At the end of the exercise an illustrated book is produced, detailing every item inside the church. So far some 1600 churches have been recorded.

A team(1) started working in St John the Baptist Church in August 2012 & expects to take 2 - 3 years to complete the project. We meet twice a month on Tuesdays & Fridays in the Church and have already discovered many  interesting memorials & objects. During the winter most of our research work is carried out at home.

Visitors are welcome to see the team at work. Or, if you are interested in joining the NADFAS recording team please contact Alan Stutchbury 780339. No previous experience necessary!

Copies of our Record will be given to:

  • The PCC.
  • English Heritage Archives.
  • The County Records Office (or the Diocesan authorities).
  • The Victoria and Albert Museum.
  • The Church Buildings Council.
As well as being a source of interest to parishioners, the Church Record is used by:

  • The PCC as a complete furnishing record.
  • The police, who can use the accurate descriptions to identify stolen artefacts.
  • Insurance companies who use the Records to identify items.
  • Researchers for their studies.
Note (1) The team working on Bishopstone church: Mike Ash, James Bell, Richard & Jane Garnett, Brenda Leach (Team Leader), Jill Makepeace-Warne, Anne & Alan Stutchbury, Valerie Everard & Robert Morgan.
