BISHOPSTONE PARISH COUNCIL
Waste Management
!!(Click
here to read the 2008 collection calendar)!!
That apparently simple task of a lorry coming to empty the dustbin has
now expanded to a major subject on its own so we need to devote this page to
keep you updated over 2007 and 2008 whilst everything is changing.
Below we have reproduced a press release from Salisbury District Council
Black boxes are
coming…
26,000 householders in
the district currently have access to the black box service.
This
allows you to recycle:
-
Newspapers and magazines
- Mixed
textiles and clothes
- Mixed
glass
- Food
and drink cans
- Foil
-
Aerosols
From November 2007 we
plan to extend this service to the rest of the district.
What
can go in the black box?
|
 |
Newspapers,
catalogues (but not hard backed), magazines, junk mail,
leaflets, envelopes (remove plastic windows) white printer paper
and most telephone directories.
|
|
 |
We can't take
Yellow Pages, cardboard or shredded paper in your black box.
Yellow Pages
are not suitable for recycling with paper however they can be
taken to Yellow Pages recycling skips at your
nearest Household Recycling Centre
(Salisbury or Amesbury) when
your new edition arrives on your doorstep.
Shredded paper
can often cause wind blown litter. Shredded paper is perfect for
use as animal bedding. Alternatively place it in
your
home composter
or food waste digester.
|
|
 |
Clean clothes,
pairs of shoes, leather belts, handbags, blankets, duvet covers
and sheets. Place them in a knotted carrier bag - they need to
be kept dry.
|
|
 |
We cannot accept
duvets or pillows.
|
|
 |
All clear, green
and brown glass bottles and jars - please rinse them out and
remove lids.
|
|
 |
No flat or broken
glass - window panes, spectacles, pyrex, lightbulbs.
|
|
 |
All food and
drinks cans and tins. Please rinse them out and crush them where
possible. This helps to save space on the collection vehicles
and reduces the need for extra trips to the bulking facility.
|
|
 |
Clean aluminium
foil - e.g. Tin foil and foil tops from milk bottles. Please
remember to rinse all aluminium foil so it is clean.
|
|
 |
No silver plastic
such as crisp or peanut packets. Try the scrunch test - if it
springs back, it's not foil.
|
|
 |
All empty aerosol
cans. Please do not squash aerosol cans.
|
|
 |
Full aerosol cans

We
already have a kerbside scheme for paper and cardboard what is happening to
that?
Once you have received your black box then the current paper and cardboard
will be changed to a cardboard only collection. Your paper goes into your
black box. You will receive details of the collection days inside your black
box when it is delivered. If you have not received this information then
please ring the Hills Waste and Recycling line on 0845 603 2085.
What about garden waste?
At present garden waste will be collected as before. Residents can put out
one ordinary refuse bag containing garden waste with your weekly domestic
refuse which is collected free of charge.
Larger amounts can be collected if placed in green garden refuse bags which
can be purchased from the council. Unfortunately we are not able to recycle
the garden waste collected.
Only grass cuttings, plants, weeds, hedge clippings, small shrub pruning’s
and uncooked vegetable waste should be put in these bags.
Green garden refuse bags cost 64p each and can be purchased from the
council’s offices at:
·
64 Endless Street,
Salisbury
·
Mere Information Point
·
Amesbury Information Point
Or
by post, which a cheque, to:
Salisbury District Council
PO Box 2126
Salisbury
SP2 2DJ
Don’t
panic if you live in flats, our officers are conducting detailed surveys on
your block of flats to provide you with the recycling facilities that best
suit your needs. But please be patient as these take time and may not be
available to all flats from November 2007.
We
need your help
to achieve the recycling targets and we are trying to make it as easy as
possible for you. We understand that we currently do not provide a service
for you to recycle everything. But what we do provide should meet our
targets if everyone joins in and gets
into the recycling habit!
It’s
easy to recycle.

Department on 01722 434 319/320.
