Hi Everyone

Welcome to the new Bishopstone Village Chat Page. As the note on the right indicates, this page is for raising village issues, asking for information about the village and for making general comments. It is not for inquiries about family history. For those please go to the new Village History and Ancestry page on this website.

There are currently two fields of poppies in Bishopstone, next to one another.
They are visible to the south of the village and accessible via Harvest Lane and Faulston. they are a little past there best but still a great sight, especially if the sun is shining.

Good luck,

Roger

Hi Have been walking the dog in Bishopstone and have come across a stray drone.
Looks very new possibly a Christmas present that has run out of juice!
Seems to be all in tact would love to reunite with owner, if you have the make and model and vague idea where it went down hopefully we can get it back to you.
Happy New Year to you all.

Hi there, we have been looking to buy Drove Cottage, Bishopstone and have just found out it has been flooded in the past. Does anyone know to what extent it flooded (the kitchen is at a lower level so possibly just area) and it looks to be surface water /saturated ground that caused the problem rather than the Eble bursting its banks. Does the area regularly flood and what have other residents done to combat the problem? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Anna,
You are correct. If you would like to contact the Emergency Planning Officer in the village, his details are on the website at the emergency Planning sidebar, I am sure he will explain.

Anna,
Click on the side bar marked Emergency Planning, then click on Community Response Group. Scroll down to Emergency Planning Coordinator for your contact who can brief you on what occurred in 2013-14.

I have just bought a painting of Bishopston church by Ian Richards. The paint is acrylic. The style and dress of the churchgoers depicted suggests it may be from the 1950's. If anyone has any information regarding Ian Richards, I should be grateful for it.

I just saw your message, William.
I used to know Ian Richards. He did live in Bishopstone, with an English painter, Susan French. I think, they both have their tombs in the church cemetery. But his family was from Australia.
He was a dear man and I am fond of his painting, and of hers.
Would you please send me a picture of the one you bought ?
Thank you, Juliette Lacroix (Paris)

Could anyone please advise who we can contact regarding the state of Faulstone/Mill Lane. I appreciate a lot of work is being carried out with the redevelopment of the barns but the lanes are becoming 'mud locked'(if that's a word!) and becoming compacted. Driving and walking along the said lanes will I'm afraid become quite treacherous if and when the frost appears. Also the ditches seem to be suffering.
Thank you

Thank you for your comment. I have taken the matter of the state of the road up with the developers. Arrangements are already in hand for the road-side ditches to be cleared.

Hi Mike, Can you let the people

That cut the hedges too clean the pavements after they have finished because the pavement from Pitts lane to harvest lane is a mess of hedge cuttings.

We do indeed have a lovely village and a lovely pub what a shame I have to air my views here as I do not have Facebook which many villagers have taken too in support of a pub that is bias in who it admits and feels it necessary to charge extortionate amounts for takeaway food that you could have delivered half the price. I have no issue with the pub as a whole good luck to them but when you listen to the few you turn away the masses

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I had the chance to visit your beautiful village!

I am not sure where, but I've lost a roll of 35mm film, Portra 400, not yet processed.
I think probably coming back from a short walk in the first field after the kissing gate at the end of the public footpath.

Please get in touch if you find it, I will be really grateful for your help.

Hi Alessandra

We will see what we can do - can you be a bit more specific about where you think you may have lost this - we have lots of footpaths and many kissing gates! If you go to the "Maps and Walks" page of this website you will find a map of the footpaths. They all have a number. Which one did you use?

Regards

Mike

I lived in the village from 1952 till about 1970, a very happy childhood there, Having a glance through the photo section, I have to admit there is a possibility my Late Father and I grace one or two photos, My father was Fred Baker a Watercress cutter for S Barter and we first lived in the cottage next to Bridge House then moved to No 1 The Orchard. I can just remember the 1953 Coronation Festival Held in a field next to one of the farms ( Drapers ?). Thank fully my memory is quite good and my head is full a wonderful memory's. It is very much in my diary to visit in 2017 along with the 100 year celebrations of my Army Regiment, Royal Tank Regiment at Bovington, a regiment I left Bishopstone to Join in 1965, for 25 years, (Good God that long).

Hello David,
My grandparents the Everetts lived on the Green and as a child in the 50,s and 60,s spent many holidays with them in the summer months. I think Stan Barter owned the cottage they lived in and can remember helping the watercress cutters as a child on 5he beds near the Croucheston Mill and where the trout hatchery now exists. I remember Brian and Billy Draper from the farm, Billy being a real village character. No doubt you were about when we visited, happy days. Never appreciated just how beautiful 5he village was and it’s lovely people until I was older.

Mobile phone mast:
The delay in the functioning of the mast seems excessive and the information on progress (or lack of) somewhat scant.
Is anything actually happening?
Can we apply more pressure please.

Helen
The Parish Council has been pressing the companies concerned for an explanation as to why the mast is not operational for some time. At the request of the Council, John Glen MP has written to the CEO's of Vodaphone, O2 and CTIL (the company that handles mast implementation). So far no response has been received. As soon as one is (and a chaser has just been sent) information will be posted on the website.

Remembering Joan and Les Morris, Bishopstone, Wiltshire

Sixty-four years ago I was a young USAF airman stationed at RAF Fairford. I met a local girl, Maureen Stone, who was a recent graduate of Notre Dame High School in Northampton. I had an identical background in Northampton, Massachusetts so we hit it off when we met dancing at the Majestic on Saturday nights. Long story short we married and came back to Swindon as often as possible to visit family and friends.
Over twenty years ago Maureen reconnected to her Euclid Street School classmate, Joan Burroughs, who was married to Les Morris and living in Bishopstone. The two picked up their friendship in minutes and we were made welcome whenever we came by, right up to a few years ago. Since then Joan passed on, and, sadly, our friend Les died on Christmas Day 2017.
Les had sung with SALOP and the talented pair of them was in love with theatre as fans and performers. Les will long be remembered for his unique homemade cinema in a cottage featured in the Swindon Advertiser on May 31, 2011. May God rest this wonderful Wiltshire couple.

Moonrakers

Ask not how we found them.
Nor, by what path we arrived.
What counts are warm receptions:
Hugs, food and tea—materialize!
In Bishopstone resides true hearts,
Les & Joan, upon their natural stage.
Music & films only hint at love; here it
Springs in torrents. Stereo. Wide Screen.
Two strangers we were, but for a minute,
Afore a Wiltshire welcome drove the days.
Americans gifted again to glimpse heaven’s
Fond miniature: garden, pond, pets, Ye Olde
Kinema: perfection a la Post Cottage. Once a
Village shop, now a home—atop Eden’s fair isle.

To Les, Joan & Lynn Morris—With gratitude for the countless
Times that you’ve taken Maureen and me into your hearts and your Bishopstone, Wiltshire home. August 2002.

I have just had to race around the house closing all the windows, but not quickly enough to stop the horrible smell of bonfire smoke that is blowing directly at us. It is stinging my eyes and irritating my throat. It's 7pm and I would have liked to have left the washing out and had the windows open for longer. When will this form of air pollution be outlawed?
